Kadiatu was born and raised in Samuel Town, Sierra Leone. Her father and her mother were farmers who grew rice and raised livestock. One day while working at the family farm, her father was bitten by a poisonous snake. As the nearest hospital was far away, Kadiatu’s father succumbed to the poison and passed away. The family’s circumstances became difficult since all the responsibilities for the farm and family fell on Kadiatu’s mother. The hard physical labour, the responsibility of being a single parent, and the meagre income all contributed to a stressful existence which led to Kadiatu’s mother falling ill. She passed away when Kadiatu was 13 years old.
Fortunately, Kadiatu’s grandfather was able to take her in and provide for her. He has been encouraging Kadiatu to pursue her academic goals and supporting her desire to go to school to become an accountant. Kadiatu is a determined young woman and feels fortunate to have her grandfather take care of her. He is a retired soldier and uses his pension funds to support her.
Despite facing devasting circumstances and becoming an orphan at the age of 13, Kadiatu is hopeful about her future prospects. Pathway Academy is providing Kadiatu with the education and support to enable her to become an educated and contributing member of society and to realize her dream of entering the accounting profession.
